Star Struck 星迷 (Dec 2007)
- Central Pier No. 7 Star Ferry
My position: Translation of press release (Eng to Chi)
Period: December 2007
Press Release – December 19, 2007
“Star Struck”––The “Star” Ferry Exhibition opens just before Christmas, although it is not a Hollywood film, but as if a “filmography”– a museum-curated photographic journey of Star Ferry’s history from inception to present day. What better venue to celebrate the iconic Star Ferry’s history than at the Star Ferry Central Pier, overlooking the Hong Kong harbor. The venue is sponsored by The “Star” Ferry Company, Ltd.
This exhibition, written and produced by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM), not only highlights the “stars” of the show––the 33 “Star” ferries that have been operated by the “Star” Ferry Company, Ltd. over the past 136 years of cross harbour operations, but also brings out the “star qualities” of each ferry, explaining why some ferries were named after the celestial body Venus–Morning Star, Evening Star–and some based on descriptive looks–Radiant, Twinkling, Shining, Glowing and Silver.
Perhaps the most interesting anecdote is the story of the Star Ferry’s five-pointed “star” logo. According to Rustom Jokhi, a trustee of the Incorporated Trustees of the Zoroastrian Charity Funds (one of the sponsors), “The word star signifies light & purity and a heavenly body that is highly respected among the Zoroastrians. The three wise men (or magi) were Zoroastrians who followed the star to Bethlehem.”
The exhibition reveals that it was also a Zoroastrian–a Parsee businessman–Mr. Dorabjee Naorojee Mithaiwala, who founded the Kowloon Ferry Co. in 1888 and operated the first scheduled steamed ferry crossings across the Hong Kong harbor.
“What is so special about our exhibition is the bringing together of like-minded people who are interested in preserving some of Hong Kong’s cultural heritage and educating the public about it,” says Cynthia Lee, Founder of The Dragon Garden Charitable Trust, who is one of the organizers of “Star Struck”.
“It started off as an idea to use Alan S.K. Cheung’s postcard collection of Star Ferry and old Hong Kong, and new photos taken by Dennis Law and members of the Universal Transport Fans Association, to put together a photo exhibition. Now, it has turned into a major museum production by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, to be enjoyed over the Christmas and New Year holidays by the Hong Kong people and tourists alike.”
For Stephen Davies, Museum Director of HKMM, this is a welcome opportunity to raise the profile of HKMM’s future relocation to Pier 8 and to show the public the quality exhibitions that HKMM is known for.
The exhibition was curated, researched and produced in-house by a dedicated HKMM museum team. The displays are written in English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, an indication of the museum’s audience at the new pier.

Incorporated Trustees of the Zoroastrian Charity Funds
Star Ferry-The Story of Hong Kong Icon
